Lynne Cox (238x178)

Profile

American writer Lynne Cox (b. 1957) was born in chilly New England, but at a young age she moved to sunny Southern California where she developed an aptitude for long distance open water swimming, crossing the 26 mile Catalina Channel at age 14.  She went on to swim across many of the most famous waterways of the world.  The English Channel, Cook Strait, the Bering Sea, Lake Baikal, the Mediterranean Sea and the Straits of Magellan – to name just a few – were all eventually added to her frequently record setting list of accomplishments.  She has gone on to become a critically acclaimed writer, contributing to numerous magazines and documenting her efforts in cold water in her first book, Swimming to Antarctica.  One of the greatest long distance swimmers of all time, she was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2000.
