Billy Collins (b. 1941) is an American poet who served as Poet Laureate of the United States from 2001 to 2003. Born and raised in New York City, he obtained a PhD in English from the University of California – Riverside and is currently a professor at Lehman College in the Bronx. He has published numerous popular collections of his own work as well as three anthologies. A recipient of numerous awards, he won the first annual Mark Twain Prize for Humor in Poetry in 2005.
