Profile
American writer David Foster Wallace (1962-2008) first rose to national prominence following the publication of his critically acclaimed, gargantuan novel, Infinite Jest, in 1997. In addition to two novels, he published several short story collections and was enthusiastically sought after as an essayist, teacher and public speaker*. His unique focus on all things ironical and his trademark – almost obsessional – use of the footnote make his work a consistently unusual experience. Following his death by suicide, his third and final novel, The Pale King, was published in 2011.
* Most famously for his commencement speech at Kenyon College in 2005, entitled This is Water.
