Born in India, author Sudhir Venkatesh (b. 1966) lives in New York City and is a professor of sociology at Columbia University. Focusing on the lives of urban gangs, drug dealers and sex workers, he has documented the importance of these participants in the underground economies of America’s large cities. He has written for several major newspapers and published numerous books, including Gang Leader for a Day and Floating City.
