Profile

Bernd Heinrich (b. 1940) is a German born emeritus professor of biology at the University of Vermont.  He has written numerous books about the natural world, often focusing on birds and insects.  Much of his research takes place at his remote cabin in the Maine woods.  His natural explorations are reliably rugged and full of remarkable challenges.

In addition to his acclaimed scientific and literary career, Heinrich is also an accomplished marathoner.  At age 40, he won the masters class of the 1980 Boston Marathon and he’s held numerous American ultra-marathon records, once running 100 miles in under twelve and a half hours.  In Why We Run, he wrote about his running career, also explaining how humans evolved to be the most proficient ultra-marathoners on the planet.
