We’ve clearly established that there is much interest in who is going to be cast as Nick and Amy Dunne in the upcoming movie version of Gillian Flynn’s best selling novel Gone Girl.  When we first talked about the movie we did a little early speculating on who might best play these juicy roles (you can read that article here) and I came up with a couple of non-starters with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman.  While I love them both, input from our readers and further contemplation of the nature of the characters opened other, better possibilities.

So here’s your chance!  We’ve put together our top 5 choices for both Nick and Amy and whipped up a couple of polls so you can vote for your favorite Gone Girl movie cast leads.  Write-in votes are always welcome in comments, of course.  If your write-in gets more support than any of our choices – you win!  No actual prize of course, just the satisfaction of being better than us, which is glory enough on its own.  Let’s get started!

Who should play Nick Dunne?

Good looking, can be charming, can be ruthless – who do you think can do it best?

Who should play Amy Dunne?

Beautiful, can be waify and fragile, can be cunning and hard – who do think can do it best?

Let’s see just how many votes we can get on this thing.  Bring it on, Gone Girl fans!  Tell us who YOU want to be in the Gone Girl movie castImdb still lists the project as “in development” so maybe Reese Witherspoon herself will drop by, see your votes and sign your favorites to the parts.  Don’t scoff (too much) – stranger things happen on the internet every day!  When we have a suitably huge number of votes (we’re counting on you, people) we’ll bring you the official Readers Lane Gone Girl Movie Cast choices.  And that will be awesome.

July 12, 2013 update!

Well, news is that Ben Affleck is in talks to play Nick Dunne.  I haven’t completely decided how I feel about this.  He isn’t quite how I picture Nick (especially now that I sort of have Bradley Cooper fixed in my brain), but he may have the chops to own the role as long as he doesn’t have a bad flashback to the days of Gigli and Jersey Girl.  Also, David Fincher is directing, which is obviously completely fabulous.

Well, folks, the whole cast list is now available!  As we know, Ben Affleck will be playing Nick Dunne – an idea that’s growing on me, especially under the direction of David Fincher.  Rosamund Pike, who was in the 2013 Jack Reacher movie as well as the 2006 version of Pride and Prejudice, has been cast as Amy Dunne – and she definitely has just the right look!   Other key characters include:

Neil Patrick Harris as Desi Collings (I love, love, love this one!)

Missi Pyle as venomous talk show host Ellen Abbott

– Newcomer Carrie Coon as Margo Dunne

Kim Dickens (from Friday Night Lights and Sons of Anarchy) as Detective Rhonda Boney

Patrick Fugit (remember when he was just a kid in Almost Famous?) as Detective Jim Gilpin

Tyler Perry as attorney Tanner Bolt.  Can’t stand Tyler Perry – this is the only casting that seriously annoys me.

And there’s a whole host of others – the entire movie has been cast and is in production.  Gillian Flynn wrote the screenplay and Reese Witherspoon’s production company is putting on the whole show.  Release date for Gone Girl is set for October 3, 2014.  I’m so excited!  I think this cast and crew can do the movie justice.  What do you think?
